Photo Exhibit at Atticus Benefits Refugees
New Haven, Connecticut (January 29, 2010) -- Atticus Bookstore-Café in downtown New Haven was the setting last Thursday night for the opening of Wall Art, an exhibition of the photography of Philip Rubin. Proceeds from the sale of these documentary photos are being donated to IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, a New Haven-based charitable organization.
The opening event raised more than $2,500 for IRIS according to Atticus Manager Jean Recapet. "The engaging photo art created an upbeat mood among the café patrons", Mr. Recapet reported, "We are optimistic that the exhibit, which will remain at Atticus for four more weeks, will continue to have a significant positive effect on the IRIS budget." IRIS Executive Director Chris George is grateful for the contributions, especially now, in the midst of an economic recession. "With charitable giving reduced and unemployment at such high levels, we are indebted to photographer Philip Rubin, and places like Atticus, that, along with their customers and employees, do so much for so many good causes".IRIS welcomes and resettles refugees forced to flee their home countries because of persecution, and are invited by the US government to start new lives in Connecticut.
Atticus, a landmark bookstore and café located in the theater district in New Haven, regularly provides a venue for non-profit events. Philip Rubin's photo exhibition will continue at Atticus through Feb. 21. For more information call (203) 776-4040, or visit atticusbookstorecafe.com
