Meet Our New Cafe Manager

Ben Gaffney has been working in great restaurants since he was old enough to wield a chef's knife. He developed his love for the restaurant life while tagging along with his chef father. Much of Ben's adulthood has been spent in the warm climates of the American south, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Professionally, Ben worked for the cooking icon Chef Emeril Lagasse. He served as Chef Emeril's pastry chef in New Orleans, Orlando, and finally opening Emeril's Miami Beach restaurant. Ben says that Chef Emeril's high energy and fast pace taught him a lot about working hard while still having fun in the business.

Atticus Bookstore/Café, in cooperation with the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, will present a booksigning and reception with Paul Goldberger, architecture critic for the New Yorker and professor of design and architecture at The New School in Manhattan. Mr. Goldberger will be signing copies of Why Architecture Matters, a penetrating investigation into how our buildings affect us and why their design makes a difference. Prior to the reception, Mr. Goldberger will participate in a panel entitled "Why Architecture Matters" at the Yale University Art Gallery at 5:30pm.

Dr. Hoge will be signing copies of Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior, a complete guide for soldiers and their families to the process of reintegrating into civilian society after service in a war zone. Prior to the reception, Dr. Hoge will participate in a panel entitled "Return from the War Zone: Reintegrating Soldiers, Sharing Experiences" at the Yale Center for British Art at 5:30pm.

Matthew Bogdanos, former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney and U.S. Marine. Col. Bogdanos will be signing copies of Thieves of Baghdad, a riveting true story of his quest to recover priceless works of art looted during the Iraq War. All proceeds from Col. Bogdanos' books are donated to the Iraq Museum. Prior to the reception, Col. Bogdanos will participate in a panel entitled "Rebuilding Culture in Iraq and Cambodia" at the Yale Center for British Art at 5:30pm.

Photo Exhibit at Atticus Benefits Refugees

New Haven, Connecticut (January 29, 2010) -- Atticus Bookstore-Café in downtown New Haven was the setting last Thursday night for the opening of Wall Art, an exhibition of the photography of Philip Rubin. Proceeds from the sale of these documentary photos are being donated to IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, a New Haven-based charitable organization.

Petting Zoo with Santa Claus and Farm Animals

Meet Santa and his farm friends from Locket’s Meadow farm in Bethany! Author Kathleen Schurman will be here with Pyramus the sheep, Rosie the goat, Ambrose the alpaca and Benny Coconut the cow. We'll even have complimentary hot cocoa to help you stay warm!

Schurman’s new book, Ozzie Osboar Counts to Sixteen (And Gets a Time-Out But Doesn’t Care) will be available for purchase and signing, as well as the 2010 Locket’s Meadow calendar. Artist Barbara Borck-Hart will be here showing some of her illustrations from previous Locket’s Meadow books.

Atticus now offers a new line of bright, fun, and eco-friendly shopping bags. They contain 15% recycled material, are machine-washable, and are fully recyclable themselves. We've also received new shipments of our popular Envirosax line of bags.

"Positively Green" Cards

Atticus now offers a new line of eco-friendly cards called Positively Green. These cards and envelopes are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper with soy-based inks. The metal card rack is recycled, and even the electricity that runs the card factory is provided by wind power! And, of course, the cards are gorgeous. Our popular Red Cap and Seltzer lines of greeting cards are also environmentally friendly.
